What I Believe »

I believe in the material word. What we see before us is actually happening. The underlying physics might be hairy and insubstantial, but we cannot discount our senses without the collapse of entire reams of experience.

I believe in objective truths. There is a proper way to act in all situations, and a right response to all problems. I also believe it is beyond us as human beings to actually know the proper way at all times, in all situations. We are constantly striving for a perfection of being that will forever escape us, sometimes by the slimmest of margins.

I believe we are not alone in the universe; that life exists other places than just our own small blue marble in space. I also believe that we haven't heard from anyone else yet, and might not ever.

I believe in the non-existence of the divine, as conceived by most world religions. Evolution produced us and all other life on Earth, from the smallest, simplest virus on up to humanity.

I believe in learning, in education, in books.

I believe that, sooner rather than later, we are going to run out of fossil fuels to consume. I believe the Earth is slowly warming, as well, from that consumption.

I believe that markets work for many things, but cannot be relied upon for certain vital systems. Utilities, health care, and other sectors of the economy where monopolization forces are strong or incentives are aligned against the consumer should be either controlled by government or tightly regulated to prevent abuses.

I believe in anarchism in a vague way. I recognize that anarchism is a utopian scheme, and might never work on a broad scale. I also believe that it might not hurt to try. I come to my anarchism from the Left, not the right; don't assume I agree with libertarians.

I believe in social liberalism. Yes to gay marriage, yes to porn, yes to the legalization of drugs.
